Abstract
The paper deals with the biomass and growth in young stand of Norway Spruce and Todo Fir densely planted in Kyoto University forest in Shibecha, Hokkaido (Lat. 43°17′N Long. 144°37′E). The stands of two species planted in 1957 is on a slope of about 10° and at altitude ca. 140 m. According to mean of 9 year's record (1968-1977) at the nursery which is located about 14 km south to the plantation, annual precipitation, mean annual temperature, WI and CI were 1060 mm, 5.5℃, 60.6℃. month, -51℃. month respectively.
As this plantation was completely closed, no undergrowth is existent. The characteristic of 19 year old stands, where two species was planted with a spacing of 1 meter, 1.5 meters and 2 meters is described in Table-1. The estimated data of biomass and growth of two species planted with a spacing of 1 meter are as follows:
1. Aboveground biomass of Norway Spruce was; stem: 65.9 t/ha, branch: 10.1 t/ha, leaf: 14.1 t/ha.
2. Aboveground biomass of Todo Fir was; stem: 40.9 t/ha, branch: 8.0 t/ha, leaf: 12.4 t/ha.
3. Current-year leaf rate of Norway Spruce and Todo Fir was 24.0 percent and 23.4 percent.
4. Annual increment rate of Norway Spruce was; stem: 6.4 t/ha, branch: 2.63 t/ha.
5. Annual increment rate of Todo Fir was; stem: 6.1 t/ha, branch: 2.3 t/ha.
6. Todo Fir showed more rapid height growth from about 15 year old, but Norway Spruce slowed down its height growth.
