Multi-sensory Display Technologies for Virtual Reality

Abstract

Almost twenty years have passed since the technical field of "virtual reality" was born. In spite of people's excessive expectations on this field for our future, the actual technologies seem to proceed rather slowly. However, there are remarkable progress in various aspects of sensory display technologies. Researchers have extended their interests to entire human senses, i.e., not only audio and visual sensations but also force/tactile, olfactory sensations, and so on. In this talk, I would like to introduce various display technologies related to virtual reality. Among them, several research topics on vibrotactile displays and olfactory displays are introduced.
