Abstract
The number of deteriorated infrastructure has increased dramatically in many countries. As a means of inspection for existing concrete structures, visual inspections are generally carried out to draw a sketch of cracks. The crack sketching takes an incredibly long time. Therefore, there is a significant demand for advanced tools for visual inspection.
Recently, digital image processing technologies have been successfully applied in different industries. As the results, there are a lot of processing techniques. However, it is difficult to find an optimal image processing procedure for extracting cracks from a concrete surface image due to the fact that a broad array of procedures needs to be evaluated. This paper describes a novel approach for automatically constructing the image processing procedure for extracting concrete cracks. A characteristic feature of the study is the adoption of evolutionary algorithms to determine an optimal or suboptimal image processing procedure.
