Recently, structural damage assessment methods using chaotic excitation have been proposed to detect damage location of civil structures as an important baseline method that can detect minor damages. Baseline methods need to prepare such information as response data of objective structure under intact condition. It is difficult to apply baseline methods to the structure without information of the baseline. To overcome the obstacle, this study attempts to develop a baseline-free damage detection method using chaotic excitation. The proposed method evaluates the spread of local areas of attractor as a feature. Through numerical simulations it is proven that the proposed method can make it possible to detect the damage location without using baseline data.
