The number of deteriorated infrastructure has increased dramatically in Japan. As a means of inspection for existing concrete structures, visual inspections are generally carried out to draw a sketch of cracks and measure crack width. Crack width is an important data in the diagnosis for the safety of concrete structures. The crack width measurement is done manually by inspectors using visual crack width gauge. The inspection takes an incredibly long time. Therefore, there is a significant demand for advanced tools for visual inspection. Recently, digital image processing technologies have been successfully applied in different industries. This paper describes an approach for automatically measuring crack width on concrete structures using image processing.
