Abstract
Onomatopoeias play an important role in daily conversation in Japanese. Onomatopoeias convey the subtle nuances. Sinc e Japanese is a language rich in onomatopoeias compared with other languages, words corresponding to the Japanese onomatopoeias is small in other languages. For this reason, it is clearly essential for Japanese learners to learn Japanese onomatopoeias. There is a web site which Japanese learners can learn 72 onomatopoeia words through skits as an existing learning method. However, methods of learning Japanese onomatopoeias currently has not yet been established. Thus, the system which supports learning of onomatopoeias for Japanese learners is required. In this paper, in order to consider the best method for learning onomatopoeias for Japanese learners, we investigate how Japanese native speakers choose onomatopoeia words. In addition, we have developed an application which Japanese learners can learn and search onomatopoeias with for tablet devices.
