Abstract

Onomatopoeia (onomatopoeia and mimetic words) is often used to describe the appearance and sounds of objects. In novels and comics, onomatopoeia can be used to convey more subtle expressions to readers. In recent years, there have been many studies on the use of onomatopoeia in Japanese language learning. In this paper, we extracted onomatopoeia used in frame images exhaustively and analyzed its features. As a result, it was found that a variety of onomatopoeia, including unknown words, exist in comic images. It could be inferred that in assigning meaning to unknown words, it is important to clarify the linguistic expression of the unknown word and the object that the unknown word expresses, and to use the target image that the unknown word expresses.
