Abstract
Munchausen syndrome, a type of factitious disorder, is a very rare disease in oral and maxillofacial surgery. We report a case of postoperative infection of open TMJ surgery on removal of adhesive pseudowalls that was suspected Munchausen syndrome. The postoperative infection of right regio temporalis was recognized; therefore, debridement was carried out twice. But wound inflammation did not disappear. In consideration of Munchausen syndrome, the wound was protected by a protector. Thereby, inflammation of the wound disappeared and the patient left the hospital. From this case, it is important that medical staff in our department share the understanding that Munchausen syndrome exists. When Munchausen syndrome is recognized, we should perform wound protection immediately and deal with it appropriately without being confused by any morbid actions of the patient.
