Abstract
We summarized appropriate procedures for Japanese endoscopists to take biopsy specimens for pathological evaluation of gastric mucosa according to the Updated Sydney System (USS). Endoscopists should take at least 2 biopsy specimens from the greater curvature of the antrum and corpus, and may take an additional specimen from the lessor curvature of incisura angularis or lower corpus. Endoscopists should pay attentions to take deep part of the mucosa with adequate biopsy forceps. Because bleeding from the biopsy site is a possible adverse event, endoscopists should decide the indication of biopsy after considering merits and demerits of taking biopsy specimens for USS evaluation. Endoscopists should ask technicians to make adequate slides for USS evaluation, and should inform pathologists of clinical information including biopsy sites.
