Abstract
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) classified at the present time as ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) are characterized by chronic relapsing inflammations of the gastrointestinal tract. In order to select the most appropriate treatment, patients must be assessed by determining the phenotype, disease extension, disease severity, and complicating cancer. Recent advances in endoscopic technology in addition to other modalities provide the possibility for the assessment of disease activity and the determination of the treatment for each IBD patient. Here we review the controversies in the use of diagnostic procedures for UC patients.
