Abstract
The advent of capsule endoscopy (CE) and device assisted enteroscopy (DAE) has changed the diagnostic algorithm for small bowel diseases. With the July 2012 introduction of the patency capsule in Japan, the indications for CE came to include all forms of small bowel disease. CE and DAE are mutually complementary and should be used in combination. Enteroscopy is useful in cases of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, small bowel tumors, polyposis syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease. Moreover, DAE is useful not only in cases of small bowel disease but also in ERCP patients with altered gastrointestinal anatomy or colonoscopy in difficult cases. For these innovative indications, groundbreaking results have been reported.
