Abstract

Recent advance in fibercolonoscope made it possible to observe directly the ileocecal valve. Previously it was possible only in the surgically removed specimens o in the. autopsied specimens. Until April 1970 we observed 20 ileocecal valves by fibercolonoscope. It was found sometimes difficult to differentiate the ceco-colic sphincter from the ileocecal valve especially when the intestinal movement is intense. We classified the papillary form, the intermediate of the former two and the ileocecal valves in which no elevations are observed. It must be stressed that in the living subject the same ileocecal valve takes various forms according to the change of the intracolic pressure and to the intestinal movement. We showed two cases of ileocolitis in which the ileocecal valves were also affected and became incompetent.
