Abstract
The purpese of this paper is to discuss the problems of early detection of gastric carcinoma through gastrocamera. We have made an attempt to standardize the diagnostic criteria of early gastric carcinoma in gastrocamera, by means of comparing the gastrocamera pictures with the macroscopic findings of the subsequently resected stomachs which were confirmed to be early cancer by mi-croscopic studies with serial sectioning. During the period 1957 to 1962, 595 stomachs were resected at Toma Hospital, including 172 stomachs with carcinoma, of which 56 cases were found at their early stages by gastrocamera. The material of this study are these 56 cases, which consist of 2 of the elevated form, 50 of the sup-erficial form, and 4 of the hollow form in ma-croscopic classification. The macroscopic classifica-tion of early gastric carcinoma by the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopic Society is applied in this study, since early carcinoma is difficult to be expressed with Borrmann's classification. The absolute majority of our cases of early gastric carcinoma belongs to the superficial form. The discussion in the present study, therefore, will be limited to this form.
