Abstract
The stages of ulcerative colitis were studied in application of magnifying colonofiberscopic examination with methylene blue enema method. The magnifying views of ulcerative colitis were classified into 5 grades, from grade 0 to grade IV, and corresponded well with histological changes in biopsied specimen. That is grade 0 to I seemed to be remission stage, grade II was transitional stage from active to remission, and grade III to IV corresponded to active stage. Furthermore, there are number of cases, which were revealed to be still active by the magnifying examination even though the ordinary endoscopic finding suggested to be remission. A new finding named "cracked appearance" was seen in some cases, and was characteristically related to the degree of inflammation through its clinical course. As a conclusion, the magnifying colonof iberscopy absolutely can cover the discrepancy between the ordinary endoscopic finding and the activity of ulcerative colitis.
