Abstract
A 50 year old female was admitted to our hospital with a chief complaint of esophageal discomfort. Barium swallow examination and endoscopic study of the esophagus revealed an oval submucosal tumor in the middle portion of the esophagus. On a follow-up examination 28 days later a well demarcated ulcer developed in the center of the lesion which had an uneven base. Biopsied specimens were obtained endoscopically, resulting in no contributory histology and surgical treatment was undertaken with a presumptive diagnosis of a nonepithelial malignant tumor. Pathology revealed esophageal tuberculosis with salient features consisting of numerous epitheloid cells, granulomas with central caseating necrosis and scattered giant cells of Langhans type Esophageal tuberculosis is an uncommon disease of which only 21 cases have been reported including this case in Japan The literatures were also reviewed.
