Abstract
The author made, in the spring of 1922 and 1923, pollination experiments with the following kinds of Cruciferous plants; the three varieties, Pe-tsai, rape and Komatuna, of Brassica campestris; B. japonica (Mibuna); the two varieties, garden cabbage and kohl-rabi, of B. oleracea; B. nigra (black mustard); B. juncea (Chinese mustard); and Raphanus sativus (radish). In the experiments, four different modes of pollination were applied, viz., natural open pollination, entire exclusion of pollen, self-pollination, and cross-pollination. The seeds obtained by crossing and selfing in the spring of 1922 were sown in August the same year, and the hybrids raised were compared with the plants of the parent strains.
