Abstract
This paper reviews current status on the mineral synthesis techniques under very high pressure. The technology with multianvil 6-8 (MA8) apparatus now permits single crystals (∼100μm) of high pressure phases to be synthesized under the pressure/temperature conditions corresponding to the lower mantle of the Earth. Moreover, temperature and pressure are well controlled and more accurately measured in this apparatus as compared with the diamond anvil cell. Recent developments in the latter apparatus, however, demonstrate that this is also a potential tool for mineral synthesis under extremely high pressure.
