Abstract

Properties of the surface structure of char black recovered from scrap tires by various kinds of pyrolysis processes and effects of ash in char black on them were investigated by 1H pulsed NMR method, evolved gas analysis on vacuum pyrolysis, and other chemical analyses in addition to JIS testing methods of carbon black.
From these experiments, the following facts were revealed. The surface of char black is composed of rubber pyrolysis residue which exhibits acidic properties, which decreases vulcanization rate, crosslink density and modulus, and increases elongation in rubber-char black compounds in which accelerators are basic. Some erros may result if usual testing methods of carbon black and interpretation of their results are applied simply to those of recovered char black, because ash disturbs characteristic values of carbon black.
