Abstract
The relation between wear of rubber vulcanizates rubbed against abrasive cloths and the mechanical properties was examined. The wear experiments were made with various vulcanizates such as natural rubber and SBR vulcanizates filled with various parts of carbon black, natural rubber vulcanizates filled with solid lubricants, vulcanizates equivalent to ASTM (D2228) calibration compounds, and commercially available carbon black filled rubber vulcanizates.
The wear of rubbers seems not to depend on the ultimate elongation. However its tend to increase inversely proportional to the modulus E and the breaking strength σB. Therefore the conclusion is drawn that the wear rates increase with 1/EσB. The wear mechanisms were changed from roll formation type to scratching type with increasing the amount of the carbon black filler. The wear rates of natural rubbers filled with graphite and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) are higher than that of the vulcanizate which is not filled with those solid lubricants. The friction of the MoS2 filled rubber is comparable to that of the rubber not filled with those solid lubricants. The friction of the graphite filled rubber is much smaller than that of the solid lubricants unfilled rubber.
