Abstract
Sealing rings on sterntube seal are often injured due to the abrasion and blister since the sterntube seal is different from the other seals of machines on the point that sea water is sealed by the sterntube seal. In order to know the characteristics of material (Fluoroelastmer) of sealing rings to the abrasion and blister, an experimental study has been carried out and the test result for the abrasion is reported in this paper.
Large size fillers were supposed to affect the characteristics of Fluoroelastmer compounds against the abrasion through the investigation of sealing rings which were seriously injured due to the abrasion in service. Many kinds of sealing ring were manufactured; large size fillers were added in some rings and only small size fillers were added in the other rings.
It was found from the test of sealing rings that the large size fillers are effective to improve the performance against the abrasion. It was also found from the simple abrasion test of rubber sheet and block that the performance of sealing rings against abrasion can not be presumed by the simple test.
