Abstract

New elastomers equipped with elasticity of chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSM) and water absorbability of polyethylene glycol diamine (PGD) were synthesized by the treatment of the graft reaction solution of CSM and PGD with tris(isocyanatophenyl) thiophosphate (TIP) in various reaction conditions. Water absorbability, tensile strength and elongation of the elastomers were investigated. PGD content and tensile strength were increased without loss of water absorbability. Other polyfunctional isocyanates were used instead of TIP and by the use of hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), the elastomer which possess excellent elasticity and water absorbability was obtained. The results of DSC and X-ray diffraction of the elastomers, suggest that the microphase separation, giving rise to a microdomain structure of PGD, takes place in the case of using HDI.
