Abstract

In order to evaluate the abrasion of a tire, it was studied which properties of rubber compound would correlate the abrasion in Lambourn abrasion test. Abrasion tests of the rubber compound mixed with polymer(SBR), and carbon black and oil of differet mix ratio were conducted in the temperature range of -5°C_??_70°C. As it was reported in many literature, physical properties of rubber compound at break and wear rate were not directly correlated. Paying attention to the relations between the size of particulate wear debris and wear rate, the study was made including such factors.
Test result shows that particulate wear debris in small at low wear rate and that it is large at high wear rate. This result indicates there is a close relation between wear rate and area of particulate wear debris.
Based on the above findings, the wear rate can be described in the following formula using, tensile energy density at break and area of particulate wear debris.
A=K[Φ/E]α _??_A: wear rate E: tensile energy density at break Φ: area of particulate wear debris K: const.≅0.006 α: const.≅0.4_??_
This can be interpreted that testing energy is used as energy for generating new surface by wear.
