Abstract

The composition of the gem minerals reflect the geological environment in which the gem mineral yielded. As an application of LA-ICP-MS, we studied geographic origin determination of ruby and blue sapphire. 3D-plot of Mg-V-Fe shows a good indicator to distinguish marble origin rubies (Viet-Nam, Myanmar, Tanzania (Morogoro)) and one of Mg-Fe-Ga shows a good indicator to distinguish basaltic origin blue sapphires (Cambodia, Thailand, China, Nigeria, Tanzania).
