Abstract

The structural colors of pearls depend on periodic structures of aragonite crystal layers and conchiolin sheets. The transmission and reflection spectra of Akoya pearls are calculated using Maxwell’s equations. A visual simulator coded by OpenGL Shading Language is also developed which can visualize the structural colors of Akoya pearls using the calculated spectra.
