Abstract

Bicolor spinel (MgAl₂O₄) were grown using a floating zone (FZ) technique with controlling O₂ concentration during growth process. Optical absorption spectra of bicolor spinel revealed that the color change of bicolor spinel is caused by a change in the oxidation state of Fe or Mn ions doped in the crystal.
