Abstract

Benign and malignant tumors of the lung were induc ed by two nitroso compounds. Three strains of mice, dd N, ICR and C3H/AHe were divided into groups and fed with either DM N or DE N, the former mixed in basal diet and the latter added to the drinking water.
Lung adenoma was noticed in 63anh lung carcinoma was found in19out of133effective animals. Three out of 19cases of lung carcinomas had distant organ metas tasis, in the liver, kidney and mediastinal nodes. Turnorsoftheliver, kidney, testis, hemangioendothelial sarcoma of the subcutis and leukemia were also observed.
DM N compound was more potent than DE N in the in duction of lung adenomas and carcinomas, and dd N and ICR mice were more susceptible than C3H.

Lung adenoma can start from either alveolar lining or bronchiolar epithelium, resulting in a mixed type of ade nomatous growth. An adenoma can progress into carcin oma, but most of the malignant growth appeared to sta rt de novo.
