Abstract

While visuospatial dysfunction is a common symptom, there are no standard rehabilitation for the dysfunction and few studies have detailed its long-term recovery. We investigated a patient with bilateral parietal lesions for more than 10 years, who showed various symptoms of visuospatial dysfunction. Poor visual immediate memory and visual inattention remains unchanged for 10 years. Although performance in the judgement of line orientation or construction tasks has improved, somatosensory cues and verbalization were necessary to solve these tasks. His problems in farm operation and integration between visual and other sensory inputs were gradually improved but remains in everyday activities. These findings indicated that, despite apparent improvement of performance in some visuospatial tasks, there is a long-term visuospatial dysfunction when bilateral parietal lobes are lesioned. Continuing supports are preferred in order to let patients know their dysfunction and devise new strategies using preserved cognitive functions.
