Abstract
Purpose:To clarify the effects of discussing their illnesses, past, and present experiences among patients with schizophrenia who have undergone this practice. Methods: We conducted a study at a psychiatric day care facility that offers a once-weekly program in which patients with schizophrenia talk as part of their treatment. Participants in the program and non-participants were compared. Differences in age, gender, antipsychotic medication use, Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale [PANSS], Identity Scale were examined. Results: Significant differences were observed only in the portrait test (P=0.004). A significant trend was also noted in the establishment of identity. No significant differences were found in other items. Conclusions: The findings indicate that talking enhances the self-image of patients with schizophrenia during the recovery phase.
