In response to the demand for improved equipment performance due to the growing demand for cancer diagnosis using PET since 2000, there has been a vigorous search for scintillator materials with higher performance, and many attractive scintillators have been developed and put into practical use. These scintillators require high density to capture high-energy γ-rays, and most of them are composed of oxide single crystals. In this section, we review the history of the development of scintillators for PET from the beginning, as well as the latest trends in scintillators.
