Abstract

The full exploitation of the newly TMCP technology by five leading Japanese steel manufacturers to produce a new NK KL33-class high-toughness, low-temperature steel plate to the requirements specified by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries resulted in the development of the LPG tank material excellent in fracture toughness for practical application to both land and marine installations.
This report summarizes comprehensive studies made of the newly developed cryogenic LPG tank steel plate, which confirmed a high level of unstable brittle crack propagation arrest capability and excellent fracture toughness it would offer as the base plate and the latter property can be ensured specifically for the high-heat-input welded joint produced in it. It was confirmed also that the LPG tanks fabricated in the newly developed steel plate could ensure high levels of safety and reliability.
