Large eye size is considered a critical factor for female facial attractiveness. The shape of the upper eyelids and the presence of eye bags influence the perception of eye size. Although double upper eyelids are known to improve facial attractiveness, the effect of eye bags on facial attractiveness remains unclear. The present study examines the impact of eye bags on facial attractiveness and perceived personality. Participants rated the attractiveness and personality of facial images implemented different combinations of upper eyelid shapes (single vs. double) and eye bag (present vs. absent). The results revealed that eye bags improved facial attractiveness when the faces had double upper eyelids. This enhancement in attractiveness can be attributed to an overestimation of eye size because the double upper eyelids and eye bags formed surrounding circles to which eyes were assimilated. Furthermore, faces with eye bags were perceived as more active than faces without eye bags. These findings suggest that the presence of eye bags may imply smiles, resulting in more positive impressions.
