Abstract
From September 1984 to November 1988, mark-recapture studies were done on the Japanese lungless salamander, Onychodactylus japonicus, at a breeding site on Mt. Hodatsu, Ishikawa Prefecture. On Mt. Hodatsu there was a winter (late September to mid December) or early summer (mid April to June) migration by breeding adults to the breeding site. The migrations to the breeding sites for over-wintering and summering occurred in winter (mid November to late December) and summer (mid May to late June). Favorable ground temperatures for surface activity of O. japonicus ranged from 10° to 20°C. Recapture records suggest that males are biennial breeders and some females probably are triennial breeders.
