Abstract
This study aims to clarify Tiantai in relation to the Buddhism of Tang period Chang'an. The position of Zhanran is not clear in the Song Gaosengzhuan or the funeral inscription of Zuoxi (_??__??__??__??__??__??_). In addition, many Tiantai teachers are related to the Buddhism of Chanjan. This led to the loos formulation of a Tiantai lineage originally.
