Abstract
Various factors which were suspected to give rise to veining defects of grey iron castings were examined. As a result, it became clear that pouring temperature and chemical composition (CE value) of the molten metal affected veining most and that the former was related to cracks on molds and the latter was related to the tendency of the metal to enter into cracks. The timing of occurrence of the veining defect and factors affecting the size of the defect were also examined.
