On the Basal Metabolic Rate and the Rate of Thyroid Uptake of I¹³¹ to Hyperthyroidismus Before a:nd After I¹³¹ Treatment

Abstract

1. In 72 cases of hyperthyroidismus rate of thyroid uptake and basal metabolic rate were determined. In 63 cases, higher values became normal by the first or the second treatment with I¹³¹.
2. Before the treatment, the averaged value of basal metabolic rate was plus 38.3% (plus 9% to 80%). After the treatment, it decreased to plus 1.4% (plus 15% to minus 12%). The averaged value of thyroid uptake of I¹³¹ was 59% (30% to 90%) before the treatment. It decreased to 25% (7% to 40%) after the treatment. 3. In some cases, when the dose of I¹³¹ was insufficient, thyroid uptake and basal metabolic rate increased slightly.
In consideration of the size of thyroid gland and the basal metabolic rate in each case, the dose of 1131 should be carefully determined.
