Abstract
From April 1966 to January 1967, in nine national sanatoria*, we examined and investi gated mental disorder patients induced by CS & TH as an object of study of tuberculosis patients. They took TH 0.3-0.5g and/or CS 0.5g per day.
The results were as follows:
1. Frequency The three treatment groups were as follows. 1) TH +……593 cases……15 cases (2.5%) 2) CS +……464 cases……25 cases (5.4%) 3) TH + CS +……582 cases……38 cases (6.5%)
2. Mental Symptoms
We recognized a clear mental disorder, such as delirium or delusion, and a slight symptom like nervous insomnia or anxiety. We divided the cases of the TH & CS as follows;
a) Resulting from TH
Insomnia, anxiety, depression, difficulty in thinking, amnesia, lowering of memory or impressibility, confusion, delusion, delirium, disorientation, hallucination of hearing and self-mutilation.
b) Resulting from CS
Drunkenness, somnolence, lethargy, anxiety lowering of atteniton, amnesia, confusion, delusion, inability to memorize, excitement, emotional exaltaiton, exhilaration, emotional incontinence, hyperthynic, thinkinog of suicide, attemptingsuicide & exhibitionism.
c) Groups receiving both TH & CS.
Patients develop symptoms of the above TH or CS, but we recognize a multiple peculiairity by using these drugs together. Now, we regard the above symptoms as the Exogne Reaction Type by BONHOEFFER.
3. Stage of Side effects, Duration and Prognosis.
Some patients develops symptoms at least in a few days or a week after taking up bout TH & CS. We called them an early reaction type of a mental disorder, but TH causes insomnia, anxiety, and difficulty in thinking, while CS causes drunkenness and somnolence.
Without stopping the oral use of drugs or other treatment, the above mental disorder lasts for long. On the contrary what we call a later reaction type in the case of TH shows symptoms of delirium and delusion.
By comparison with TH, in the case of CS, patients develop more symptoms unexpectedly in a few days after oral use.
But the duration of a mental disorder is generally shortened by using TH (2-3 weeeks), CS (4-5 weeks), that is to say, if the patients show improvement, by stopping prescribing medicine, and giving him psychiatric drugs like CHLORDIAZEPOXIDE, DIAZEPAM and VITAMINE B1, B2, B6.
4. Privision and Prophylaxis.
Patients who take TH & CS for the first time have much frequency of illness, . comparing with ones who suffer from a mental disorder are nervous somber, introversive in their character.
But when patients are in a condition of physical fatigue, anxiety and trouble mentally they are apt to suffer from a mental disorder more by using TH & CS.
