Abstract
Recently several reports and studies on child autism and child schizophrenia are seen. These two diseases, however, are neither well recognized as a clearly identified syn-drome, nor the therapeutic means are established.
We have been treating inpatient children in our pediatric ward, the so-called “a clinical ward for severe physically and mentally handicapped children”, under the guide-line for helping the independent living ability of the mentally-retarded children, among whom autism and schizophrenic children are included.
With these remedial education, autistic children do not show any improvement in the development of language, in the ability of recognition or in the adaptability of daily life. On the other hand, schizophrenic children show improvement and differentiation in various respects.
We believe that we can expect the development and psychotic ability of the handicapped children, only if we can find the most suitable trainig and education programs, even though they damage their central nervous system.
Considering our development of mental function, the observation of these children on remedial education suggetss the following results: autistic children may have some deficit of social affinity, which can be regarded not only the result of brain damage, but also as the result of some problems in a phylogenic sense: child schizophrenia, on the other hand, is regarded as the disease due to some organic brain damage.
