Abstract

This is a report of four autopsy cases of neonatal herpes virus infection with isolation of HSV type I. We have had six cases of HSV infection among approximately 450 cases of neonatal and infant autopsies performed since 1969. These four cases were all mature babies who died between 7 to 11 days after birth. There are typical necrotic foci of liver in all cases. Case No. 2 showed widespread necrotic foci besides liver lesions and cases No 3 and 4 showed adrenal necrotic foci besides the liver lesion. In the case of neonatal HSV infection which died around 7 days after birth, severe viremia apparently occurred rapidly in the individual but the reason was obscure. The pathological change of the thymus was not severe in HSV infected cases. Malformation, abortion and/or stillborn were produced if the HSV infection occurred during early pregnancy. There were no distinct pathological differences between type I and II HSV infection.
