Abstract
Bacterial and clinical features were examined in 10 sporadic cases with hemolytic uremic syn-drome (HUS). Anti-lipopolysaccharide (LPS) antibody and antiverotoxin (VT) antibody were de-tected in 9 and 7 of 10 cases, respectively. The examination of anti-LPS antibody types showed 7 were O157, 1 O165, 1 O18 suspected, and 1 undetermined, Pale face, diarrhea, and fever were ob-served in most cases, while abdominal pain and hematoemesis were common in the cases with O157 infection. Hypoproteinemia and abnormal electrolyte balance were highly detected in the cases with O157 infection. Two cases were recovered after treatment with peritoneal dialysis and 8 cases with sup-portive therapy. The intervals of admission was longer in the cases with O157 infection as com-pared to the cases with other types.
These results suggested that 70% of sporadic HUS cases were derived from O157 infection, and that clinical features in HUS cases with O157 infection might be more severe.
