Abstract
Recently the definition of and the therapy for bronchial asthma has been dramatically changed; from “the contraction of airway smooth muscle” to “the inflammation of airway mucosa”.
This change has resulted in the continuous publications of international and Japanese guidelines for asthma therapy. More recently, however, it has been demonstrated that the airflow limitation of the “steroid-resistent” asthma may probably due to the histological change of the airway mucosa, “remodeling”. In this review, 1 would like to introduce the idea of the repair and the remodeling process in asthma and my research regarding airway cells of bronchial mucosa.
