Abstract
The laboratory findings and treatment for malnutrition and pancreatic diabetes in a case of malabsorption syndrome that underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy due to strongly suspected pancreatic carcinoma, were observed for 12.5 years to evaluate the therapy and to consider more effective treatment methods. The patient was a 5$-year-old man who complained of general fatigue, edema and diarrhea.
Anemia, hypocholesterolemia and liver dysfunction gradually progressed during the course of the disease. The decrease in serum cholesterol levels was marked and considered to be important for evaluation of malnutrition. Furthermore, blood glucose levels varied greatly and the control of diabetes was poor during the above mentioned period.
These results should be considered and examined in large sample sizes in the future. The treatment for malabsorption and diabetes mellitus was very difficult when postoperative intractable diarrhea could not be controlled.
