This paper examines smart factories and manufacturing digital transformation (DX) through a case study of Okuma’s Dream Site (DS1∼ DS3). It argues that a smart factory is not a fixed concept, but an evolving system aimed at sustaining competitiveness through continuous improvements in efficiency. Okuma’s three-layer architecture demonstrates how digitalization, automation, and intelligent technologies can be incrementally integrated while maintaining operational stability. The study highlights several key aspects. First, the integration of the engineering chain and supply chain reduces inefficiencies and improves overall system performance. Second, data-driven management which supported by IoT, visualization, and feedback control, enables real-time decision-making and optimization. Third, advanced technologies such as AI-based predictive maintenance and robotics enhance productivity and equipment utilization. In addition, human-centric design remains essential, as skilled workers continue to play a critical role in high-precision manufacturing. Environmental sustainability is also embedded in Okuma’s approach through energy-efficient technologies. Finally, the paper discusses challenges in manufacturing DX, including system integration complexity, scalability, human resource development, and investment evaluation. The findings provide practical insights for developing next-generation smart factories.
