Study

This year, ISIJ International celebrates its 60th anniversary, diamond jubilee. Since it was first published as Tetsu-to-Hagané Overseas in 1961, the Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute of Japan has been one of the leading technical sources on the cutting edge of iron and steel technology.

In 1961, when the first volume was published, Japan was in the first high economic growth (1955-1965). Along with the economic growth, domestic demand for iron and steel products increased, and crude steel production began to sharply increase. Slab continuous casting machine also started operation in the previous year. In 1961, crude steel production was approximately 28.27 million tons and the seaside integrated steelworks construction was energetically promoted. When Japan was about to become one of the developed countries as the West 20 years after the war, when the nation was recognizing the iron and steel industry as fundamental and indispensable in a more significant way, ISIJ Int. was launched as an academic journal showing the foundation of Japan’s growing iron and steel technology to the world.

In a message from President Asada of the time in the first issue of the first volume, he described that the remarkable progress in iron and steel technology at that time was the result of the efforts of engineers in each country based on the research results. Since there was a cross-border exchange of science and technology between scientists and engineers in the field, to further deepen the exchange and friendship and to further contribute to the development of science and engineering in the field was the mission of the publication of Tetsu-to-Hagané Overseas. Ever since the Japanese iron and steel industry has been in a boom and bust, with the second high economic growth, the oil shock, the bubble economy, the burst of the bubble, the lost 30 years, and the ups and downs of the Japanese economy. We have made progress and reached the top level in the world. The authors, referees, editors, and all related people have every reason to be proud of the fact that ISIJ Int. has continued to support this development over the last 60 years. Their efforts and achievements deserve sincere respect from the iron and steel technology community.

In recent years, iron and steel technology is still progressing, and the development of new technology is under fierce competition worldwide. Iron and steel materials, which are widely used for transportation, energy and resources, and social infrastructure, are essential materials for human civilization today. In order to fulfill the requirements from automobiles, railways, buildings, bridges, home appliances and the like, we have developed light, strong, and environmentally friendly iron and steel products, resulting in the progress of human civilization where human beings can live more conveniently and more peacefully. For the research and development of iron and steel technology that supports such progress, the exchange of science and engineering in the field will still be indispensable, just as it was when the Journal was first published. Now that civilization requires sustainable development, we must continue to take on challenges that no one has ever overcome. This is the mission of engineers and researchers involved in the iron and steel industry. ISIJ Int. will continue to be the collective wisdom needed for the challenges, as it has always been.

Established in 1915, the institute has contributed to the development of iron and steel technology and to human resource development for over 100 years as our everlasting tradition. With ISIJ Int. Volume 60 as a new starting point, ISIJ Int. will continue to be a significant source for researchers involved in the development of iron and steel technology that will enable them to overcome challenging technical issues.
