Statistical Thermodynamics of Sulphur Solution in Molten Iron

Abstract

A sulphur solution in molten iron is analysed by statistical thermodynamics based on the a priori assumption of the constant solute-solute interaction at a given temperature. The interaction energy E_S-Fe between S and Fe in molten FeS_x is estimated to be about -51kJ mol^-1 and E_S-S about -9.6kJ mol^-1. The effect of additional interstitial element (C and P) on the solubility of S in molten Fe is also discussed.
