Mechanical alloying (MA) of iron nitrides and ferrous nitrogen aolid solution is studied and discussed in order to determine which role does an interstitial such as N play in the MA process and what is the influence of the N2 molecule in respect to the reaction between the gas and the solid phase. Emphasis has been put on the influence of ball milling conditions on the microstructure. The conditions for transferring laboratory result to an industrial process are discussed.
