Thermodynamic properties of chlorine in the CaO–SiO2–Al2O3, Na2O–SiO2–Al2O3and CaO–SiO2–Al2O3–Na2O slags have been investigated in the present study. The experiments were carried out using gas-slag equilibrium, controlling both PO2 and PCl2simultaneously (PO2=10-16 - 10-19atm, PCl2 = 10-10 - 10-13 atm at 1673–1748 K), and the solubility of chlorine in the 40mass%CaO–40mass%SiO2–20mass%Al2O3slag was found to vary in proportion to PO2-1/4 and PCl21/2 . Accordingly, the chloride capacity ( CCl– ), which represents the ability of slags to absorb chlorine, has been defined as;
CCl- =PCl21/2(mass%Cl-)PO21/4
The CCl– values were observed to increase with increasing slag basicity and temperature, and showed a reasonable relationship with that of CS2-.
