Abstract

Amerasians are people who have American and Asian parents. It usually has the implication that they are people who are born with the factual background of US military presence and/or deployment.

This research works to validate the term “Amerasian” along with the term “double” which has undertook a symbolic role with regards to the educational practice and the spreading of the discourse for the AmerAsian School in Okinawa. It will examine “double” as a term that has been established though the process of finding new ways of educational practice, space of speech, and discourse, and as a symbolic representation that is being formulated presently.

First, the research will clarify how the term “double” has been placed within the Japanese speech. Secondly, the research will clarify how the term “Amerasian” has been used by reviewing Amerasian research within the United States. By taking that into consideration, it will explore the individuality and versatility involving the educational practice and the discourse of “double’s education” in AmerAsian School. And it will speculate on the kinds of phases that are manifested when the concept of ethnicity gets filtered through the Amerasian perspective while slipping through the “double” representation.
