This paper aims to review the literature on Filipino migrants in Japan since the 2000s, when the term “multiculturalism” spread in the Japanese society. Recent studies based on the Census 2000 data on the socioeconomic status of migrants in Japan reveal that Filipinos, in comparison with other migrants, are a group of vulnerable/disadvantaged women with quite limited oppotunitiess for upward mobility. Studies of Filipino migrants in Japan have focused on the exploration inside the ethnic community, inter-ethnic relationships between the local community, and education for children(1.5 and second generation), while less attention has been paid to the social structural issues such as poverty, educational attainment of children, and reproduction of social status.
