Since March 2000, NHK has been providing live closed-captioning of its broadcast news programs using a real-time speech recognizer. This paper describes subject's permissible and preferable limits of the timing differences for closed captions superimposed onto TV news programs. The results show that subjects could accept a time difference of about ±3 seconds when watching news programs.
