Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of effectiveness on the luma adaptive quantization for ITU - R Rec . BT.2100 Hybrid log - Gamma (HLG) transfer characteristics. The luma adaptive quantization was originally derived t o comp ensate the observed redistribution of code levels between bright and dark image areas associated with the High Dynamic Range (HDR) transfer characteristics. In the analysis , Standard Dy na m ic Range (SDR) signals are converted into HLG container . The observe d linear relationship between the code levels associated with the BT.709 and HLG suggests that the luma adaptive quantization is not necessary for HLG and endorses the premediated backward compatibility of HLG to SDR.
